R-22 Refrigerant Phase Out

What you should know….

If your heating and air conditioning system is more than three years old chances are it utilizes R-22 refrigerant. If you have your air conditioner “topped off” every summer then you have a leak and the cost to refill your air conditioner is on the rise.

Here are the facts….

R-22 is a type of refrigerant that has been used in air conditioning units and heat pumps for over 40 years. When released into the atmosphere from a leak, R-22 contributes to the depletion of the ozone. When R-22 is manufactured it creates a by-product that contributes significantly to global warming. Due to these negative characteristics the Federal Government made the decision to phase out the manufacturing and production of R-22 refrigerant by 2020.

Long Story Short….

Due to reduced supply, the cost of R-22 is increasing dramatically. Existing air conditioners and heat pumps still using R-22 can continue to be serviced with R-22 and you are not required to replace your existing equipment. However, as a result of the phase out, the cost of R-22 and the cost to repair your air conditioner or heat pump will skyrocket.

What’s being done about it?

Manufacturers of heating and air conditioning equipment have already switched to environmentally friendly refrigerants such as R-410A. These systems are far more efficient and cost less over time than the older heating and air conditioning systems. Although we continue to maintain and repair equipment with R-22 refrigerant we want you to be aware of the high cost associated with repairing these types of heating and air conditioning systems.

What are your choices if you still have an air conditioner or heat pump that uses R-22?

1) You can keep your existing equipment. You DO NOT have to replace your old air conditioner or heat pump. You WILL NOT be required to stop using R-22 refrigerant. After 2020, the servicing of air conditioners and heat pumps will rely on recycled or stockpiled refrigerants. It will become increasingly expensive as the phase out approaches.

2) You can replace your current heat pump or air conditioning system with one that is more efficient, lowers your energy bill, has less costly breakdowns, and is better for our environment.
