3 Ways To Start A Career In HVAC

You want to pursue a career in HVAC. That’s great! But what should you do first?

Before you do anything, research to learn if you’re more interested in commercial or residential. Overall, HVAC is a very rewarding career, but there are pros and cons to each type of work so it’s best to know which one you want to build a future in. Also know that you can change your mind and switch from one to another. You may need an additional certification or two and some extra training, but you won’t need to start all over if you stay within the HVAC field.

The best ways to get started in the HVAC industry

As the old saying goes, there’s more than one way to skin a cat [eww]. And in the end, you want to earn a comfortable living, be a problem solver, fulfill your purpose of helping people in need, and never stop learning. There are many HVAC schools and technical programs available in Hampton Roads to jump-start your career, but which option is the best for you?

  1. Enroll in HVAC School – If classroom learning is your jam (and you have $$ to spare), go for a formal education in HVAC. Many classes are offered at night too, so you can work and go to school at the same time. There are some drawbacks though, including the cost (anywhere from $1,200 – $15,000) and the time necessary to complete the degree (two years or more at some schools!).
  2. Become an Apprentice – Private companies and technical schools offer HVAC apprenticeship programs in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake and surrounding areas.  A mix of classroom and hands-on training, apprenticeships are a great alternative to paying for a degree with an HVAC school. Be sure to read all of the details before committing to anything! Most programs require an investment of your time and money. And your earning potential may be limited until you’re officially certified or achieve certain milestones as dictated by your program.
  3. Get Paid to Learn –  Save time and money by choosing to work for a company that invests in you. We understand the hesitation of starting a new career with no experience and the fear of having enough money to invest in your education and support yourself and your family. Our onboarding program is the best in Hampton Roads and includes classroom, technical lab, and on-the-job training. Plus you get paid (minimum $15/hour) starting day one!

Another benefit? Our Tool Lease Program allows you to be fully equipped with everything you’ll need to be a successful HVAC technician. And you’ll learn how to use those tools from the best in the industry. Some places say their programs are taught by “seasoned HVAC technicians with years of industry-related experience,” but when you join our team, you’ll get one-on-one time with our technical director (Dave) as well as full access to any of our team of experienced technicians.

Every HVAC technician career path is different, but no matter which way you choose start, the real test comes when you enter the field on your own. So choose a place where you will learn and master your new skills while being surrounded by a supportive team that will help you succeed in your career in HVAC.
