Ways To Improve Indoor Air Quality In The Summer

Improve Your Indoor Air Quality in the Summer to Stay Healthy and Comfortable

The change of seasons means changes in the weather, which can often lead to changes in your indoor air quality. The air in your home will typically stay relatively consistent throughout the year, but in the summer, you may notice an increase in the amount of dust and pollen that finds its way indoors. In addition, summer is also the season when many people start spending more time indoors as the weather becomes warmer. Because of this, it’s important to take steps to improve indoor air quality in the summer. Thankfully, there are a number of ways to do this.

Change Seasonal Habits

One of the best ways to improve indoor air quality in the summer is to change your habits. This can include things like reducing the time spent in your home, changing your air filter, having annual tune ups for your air conditioner, and keeping a regular cleaning schedule.

When deciding where to clean, it’s important to remember that dust, dirt, and other allergens tend to accumulate in the lower layers of indoor air. This means that you’ll want to clean the lower sections of your home, including the floors, baseboards, and furniture. Once a month should be sufficient for cleaning these areas (or more often if you have pets).

Use Natural Ventilation

One of the best ways to improve indoor air quality in the summer is to increase the amount of natural ventilation in your home when the outdoor weather cooperates. Natural ventilation simply means opening up the windows, door, or wall units, to allow air to flow freely inside and outside of your home.

You’ll want to make sure that you’re not just opening the windows or doors, but that you’re increasing the amount of air moving around inside your home. This can be as simple as setting up a fan or opening multiple windows and doors throughout your house to encourage airflow.

Do Some Detective Work

You can tell your indoor air quality is off, but you’re not entirely sure where to begin? You may want to do some detective work! This means looking closely at your home, to see what changes you can make that will improve the air flow.

Depending on where you notice the biggest issues, you may want to consider opening a window or door, or even rearranging furniture. Once you’ve identified the areas where you notice the most difference, you can make adjustments to improve the air flow in those areas.

Invest in IAQ

Finally, if you notice an increase in the amount of dust and pollen in your home, you’ll want to consider investing an indoor air quality product (like a Coil Scrubber). This is just one of the products we offer to help keep indoor air clean and healthy year round, but it can also be effective at removing allergens and pollutants during the summer. Please note, health effects may be experienced immediately or possibly years later if you’re exposed to indoor air pollutants, according to the EPA.

While outdoor air quality can vary a great deal from place to place, and even from moment to moment, indoor air quality is generally much more consistent and predictable. This means that, in general, you can plan ahead for how you’re going to keep your indoor air quality the summer months in check.
