Three of the Most Common Home AC Repairs

Be Aware of These Common Home AC Repairs

Wouldn’t it be great if your air conditioner worked perfectly all the time? Unfortunately, we can’t all be that lucky.

With so many parts and pieces involved in the function of the equipment, it’s impossible to guarantee your home’s air conditioner will never breakdown. But we can educate you on the most common AC repairs that may not be as bad as you think so you know what to expect when the time comes and maybe even help prevent a costly repair visit.

AC Won’t Turn On

Thermostats play a huge role in the function of your home’s AC. If your system won’t turn on at all, confirm your thermostat is set to the COOL mode. It sounds simple, but thermostats that are wired incorrectly, have dead batteries, or are just programmed incorrectly cause your AC to not work at all. To troubleshoot, review your thermostats manual. [For Honeywell programmable thermostats, click here. For Nest thermostats, click here]. If you haven’t replaced your thermostat in over a decade, it may be time for an upgrade! If it’s not your thermostat or your coil is frozen, it may be your motor or compressor and a professional will need to diagnose what the problem is.

AC Not Blowing Cool Air

A dirty condenser or clogged filter can cause your home’s AC to blow warm air. Check your outdoor unit to ensure it is free from debris. The general rule is to have at least 2-3 feet between your unit and any plants or obstructions. And filters should be replaced every three months! But check every month in case they need replaced more often. Interfering with the airflow of your system also makes it work harder, which costs you more money. If it’s still blowing warm air, your compressor or refrigerant levels may be the cause and a professional will need to step in.

Inadequate Cooling From AC

On an average summer day, every room in your home should be cool per your personal thermostat setting. AC systems are designed to maintain a 15-20 temperature difference to the outdoor temperature. [To know what to expect in extreme temperatures, click here.] If your system is unable to cool you consistently, it may be the wrong size! Too small means it never gets cool enough no matter how hard it works. Too big means it will short cycle, turning on and off frequently because it’s confused about the desired temperature of the house. Either way, you’re not comfortable. If your system is sized correctly and it won’t keep up on a normal summer day, it may be a problem with your refrigerant charge or your evaporator coil may be icing over. If you DO see ice on your outdoor unit, shut if off and call our team immediately.
