Three Tips for Turning on Your Furnace for the First Time This Season

The best part about winter is turning on your furnace and knowing it will keep you comfortable.

As we get closer to cooler weather, it is easy to switch on the heat without giving it a second thought. However, it’s likely been months since you last used your heating system and there are a few important things to check before turning on your furnace for the first time.

1. Why is there a burning smell?

After a few months, dust can settle on the heating components of your furnace. When you turn on your heater for the first time, it is not uncommon to smell the burning dust. Don’t be alarmed! You can open a window or two to get rid of the odor. When should you worry? If the smell persists for more than a few hours! It’s also a great time to change your air filter. Turn your system off right away if there is an actual fire or smoke coming from the system.

2. Do batteries need to be changed?

If your heating system is gas, first and foremost make sure you have a carbon monoxide detector in your home. Every year, before you turn on your heating system, ensure you have fresh batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. If either alarms are beeping, turn your heating system off and evacuate your home. The police or fire department may need to be called to ensure your home is safe!

3. Is the furnace making any unusual noises?

Does it sound like a bagpipe in a blender? Or maybe it’s not blowing warm air? If you fire up your heating system and is seems to be struggling in any way, it may need a tune-up or even service. Getting routine maintenance will help prevent your system from breaking down and also increase its efficiency (saving you money!).
