What Does MERV Have to do With It?

MERV ratings are used to rate the ability of an air conditioning filter to remove dust from the air as it passes through the filter. MERV is a standard used to measure the overall efficiency of a filter. Higher MERV ratings mean fewer dust particles and other airborne contaminants pass through the filter.

MERV ratings are determined by adding particles of varying sizes (1-12) into a controlled testing environment. The particles are added upstream of the test filter and a laser particle counter samples the air before it enters the filter and after it leaves the filter. The two particle counts are compared to calculate the Particle Size Efficiency of the tested filter. Once this is determined, a MERV Parameters chart is used to determine the MERV rating.

MERV ratings range from 1 – 16 and measurements are in microns. Some of the common particles related to MERV ratings are pet dander, insecticide dust, smog, dust, viruses, wood, tobacco smoke, spores, bacteria and pollen.

Some of the most common filters found in residential use only have a MERV rating of 1 to 4.These are typically disposable panel type filters and do not do a good job of filtering the air because they will not stop particles smaller than 10 microns.

MERV 5 to 8 rated filters are a better choice and are more commonly found in commercial applications. These filters will collect particles as small as 3 microns and are a good choice for home owners also.

Filters with a MERV rating of 9 to 12 are used in commercial and industrial applications and will stop particles in the 1 to 3 micron range. These filters are a great choice for home owners who want the best dust control possible. When using filters with Merv 9 ratings and above it is important to clean or replace them when recommended by the manufacturer because they will have a negative effect on air flow when they become dirty. This can lead to performance problems and decreased operating efficiency.

The most efficient filters have MERV ratings of 13 to 16 and will stop particles as small as .3 microns. These filters are used in hospitals and other super clean environments.

  • Before you consider this as negative about the installation: Please take note of the condition the installers endured. Heavy rain the night before, high winds, dropping temps accompanied by sleet and snow. We were told to expect work to start between 8-10am. They did arrive just prior to 10am. The traffic between the truck and crawl space entrance resulted in a muddy mess across our back yard. Both young men work hard to protect our home from this with wearing floor protectors and covering floors from the front door to work areas. … There was a section of vent left behind under the house (too large to pass through crawl space access) Installers had to break down old system to pass it through access.

  • We were pleased with Chris and his knowledge of the product he was presenting. Also surprised that he crawled under the house to inspect the existing duct work.

  • My one recommendation would be to advise newer clients who have no had to purchase an A/C unit of the task benefits to energy start appliances. I learned of this after the fact and I wish I had known because it was a big investment for me. I would have liked to have known more about the ecoler system before It was installed. I love it, however I didn’t know I was getting it until it was on the wall. I’d like to know if it breaks am I responsible for replacing it or is One Hour Heating and Cooling.

  • Bringing the wrong parts. The installers had to go back to the shop to get the right parts. Ryan arrived to our house a little after 5. He left after 8. I feel it is important to quote on services needed and then tell about other services offered. We spent approx.. 2.5 hours waiting for a quote and then there were 4 quotes on the table that were not what we had asked to be quoted on. Finally in the last 15 min, he was here, we got a quote for what we asked for. Only to find out the day of the install, it wasn’t the right quote. I feel this quote process took entirely too long. Most especially at that time of the night. I do not feel it should take 3 plus hours to get a quote. Installers did an excellent job. Very professional.

  • Long time Club member with some issues concerning our heating & AC installation. 1) Pat installed new Thermostat a year ago, the installation was to have top of the ling unit… but technician could not be installed due to # of wires available without routing wires through the ceiling and walls. 2) I was not told chimney would be off-set and not use the 4’ riser as well as other gas exhaust use on my roof. Simply have white open pipe which tech said was what spec called for. No offer to use in place chimney access, no discussion ‘til after the fret- when I noticed the whole pipe was not straight. 3) I had asked to use the existing cement for the next conclusion. Installed placed pad as top of cement but did not level. Bottom line- Not what I expected/ was sold and not happy with installation.

Two additional trucks stopped by, one with Tim to advice John on the combustion vertilation and the Furnace Fluency and the other to delivery material. I understand the importance of maintaining and controlling costs, but just a little help may have gotten John and Amos away sooner. It was a long day for everyone and drivers were delayed for all. One Hour has proven itself to be responsive and comprehensive in servicing my system on Spartan ave; it was this level of service that prompted us to contact One Hour when we needed a system in our Rental (Essex Circle, where this work was just completed). I continue to recommend your company to family and friends.
